Hey folks, I'm pretty new to surfing so I'm hoping you can help me out.

I've only been surfing once before and I fell in love with it. I just got a great job that is web-based so I can work from wherever I want. I'm planning to go somewhere warm and oceany this summer, and I want to learn to surf while I'm there. The trick is, it's not a vacation - I'll still need to work which means reliable web access.

I'm looking for a place that:

Is relatively low cost-of-living
Good internet access
Good beginner-level surf in July - August

It also needs to be in the western hemisphere (no further west than Hawaii and no further East than Africa) so that the time zone syncs up with the rest of the people I'm working with.

Where do you recommend? Thanks everybody!

Dolphins save surfer from becoming shark’s bait
A pod of bottlenose dolphins helped protect the severely injured boarder

Nov. 8: Todd Endris was surfing when he was bitten by a 12- to 15-foot shark, but thanks to a couple of Flippers and a friend he survived. TODAY anchor Meredith Vieira reports.

Today show
By Mike Celizic
TODAYShow.com contributor
Thurs., Nov. 8, 2007

Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark — a monster great white that came out of nowhere — had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.

That’s when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life.

“Truly a miracle,” Endris told TODAY’s Natalie Morales on Thursday.

The attack occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 28, just before 11 a.m. at Marina State Park off Monterey, Calif., where the 24-year-old owner of Monterey Aquarium Services had gone with friends for a day of the sport they love. Nearly four months later, Endris, who is still undergoing physical therapy to repair muscle damage suffered during the attack, is back in the water and on his board in the same spot where he almost lost his life.

“[It] came out of nowhere. There’s no warning at all.

Maybe I saw him a quarter second before it hit me. But no warning. It was just a giant shark,” Endris said. “It just shows you what a perfect predator they really are.”

The shark, estimated at 12 to 15 feet long, hit him first as Endris was sitting on his surfboard, but couldn’t get its monster jaws around both surfer and surfboard. “The second time, he came down and clamped on my torso — sandwiched my board and my torso in his mouth,” Endris said.

That attack shredded his back, literally peeling the skin back, he said, “like a banana peel.” But because Endris’ stomach was pressed to the surfboard, his intestines and internal organs were protected.

The third time, the shark tried to swallow Endris’ right leg, and he said that was actually a good thing, because the shark’s grip anchored him while he kicked the beast in the head and snout with his left leg until it let go.

The dolphins, which had been cavorting in the surf all along, showed up then. They circled him, keeping the shark at bay, and enabled Endris to get back on his board and catch a wave to the shore.

Our finned friends
No one knows why dolphins protect humans, but stories of the marine mammals rescuing humans go back to ancient Greece, according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

A year ago in New Zealand, the group reports, four lifeguards were saved from sharks in the same way Endris was — by dolphins forming a protective ring.

Though horribly wounded, Endris said he didn’t think he was going to die. “Actually, it never crossed my mind,” he told Morales.

It did, though, cross the minds of others on the beach, including some lifeguards who told his friend, Brian Simpson, that Endris wasn’t going to make it.

Simpson is an X-ray technician in a hospital trauma center, and he’d seen badly injured people before. He had seen Endris coming in and knew he was hurt.

“I was expecting him to have leg injuries,” he told Morales. “It was a lot worse than I was expecting.”

Blood was pumping out of the leg, which had been bitten to the bone, and Endris, who lost half his blood, was ashen white. To stop the blood loss, Simpson used his surf leash as a tourniquet, which probably saved his life.

“Thanks to this guy,” Endris said, referring to Simpson, who sat next to him in the TODAY studio, “once I got to the beach, he was calming me down and keeping me from losing more blood by telling me to slow my breathing and really just be calm. They wouldn’t let me look at my wounds at all, which really helped.

A medivac helicopter took him to a hospital, where a surgeon had to first figure out what went where before putting him back together.

“It was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle,” Endris said.

Six weeks later, he was well enough to go surfing again, and the place he went was back to Marina State Park. It wasn’t easy to go back in the water.

“You really have to face your fears,” he told Morales. “I’m a surfer at heart, and that’s not something I can give up real easily. It was hard. But it was something you have to do.”

The shark went on its way, protected inside the waters of the park, which is a marine wildlife refuge. Endris wouldn’t want it any other way.

“I wouldn’t want to go after the shark anyway,” he said. “We’re in his realm, not the other way around.”
Austin's saying for the day . . . " A light heart lives longest " - 'Austin's proof is in the pudding! This stunning lad was found LITERALLY SURFING in the ocean. A good Samaritan surfer took him home after catching a few waves together to tried & locate Austin's owners. Austin is an 2 year old old Pharaoh Hound/ Staffie Mix - and follows the true characteristics of his Hound ancestry - The Pharaoh Hounds appearance is of grace, power and speed. They are medium sized and of noble bearing with hard clean-cut lines. A sight and scent hound, they are an intelligent and affectionate dog who are playful and enjoy a good run. He is very friendly - loves to play with other dogs - and absolutely adores the beach - Austin is a teenage boy, full of love, life, funny antics - and in need of a firm, kind guardian. Austin is very resourceful, while at one of the best training facilities in sunny Los Angeles, Austin decided to make himself at home in a large plastic container filled with water for the gang. His head tipped back, his body comforted by the cool water, he peacefully dozed while his thirsty pack looked on. One of our most "Romantic" guys yet, Austin is also a graduate of Canine Communications Training Facility and continues his training as a "properly balanced" dog at a premiere facility. Austin plays well with others & will look to a guardian for "alpha" direction. Austin is full of energy, intelligent, affectionate, playful and always down for a good belly rub. If you are looking for your forever companion who will keep you entertained, in great shape and you have a big enough heart for Austin to "jump" into - this is your boy !
If you are interested in meeting this dog, please call Elizabeth at 310-995-1221 or email her at pitstoprescue@comcast.net. ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS: Application, Contract, Home-Check and Tax-deductible adoption fee/donation. All animals are healthy, altered, micro-chipped and up-to-date on all shots.

There is some mom and pop places to stay from anywhere from $20 a night to to $200. I'm a guide down there. I can pick you up at the airport take you to the good place to eat and to the breaks. Its mostly lefts down there. If you're good I can take you to Nexpa. That's about 3 hours from the Zihuantenjo airport. Troncones is about 40 minutes from the airport. There's a beach break going right and left there...hav'nt broken any boards yet but i've come up looking! There is a fun left point break called manzanillo there (in troncones not Manzanillo). It's a scary hairy drop then just some mush. Don't fall or you might get 30 urchin spines like me. That sucked! I hobbled up to the beach while everybody gave it a shot pulling 3" spines out of my foot. That felt good compared to the sting ray that slashed my aquilles tendon.
Some rights somewhere secret that would cost extra and ya gotta be special. I have a 4runner. My cost is $100 per day for 1 to 4 people with a 3day Min. I have a 4 runner so riding on the beach is cake! I can take people to their hotel on the beach pick y'all up in the mornig or take you to the beach and be real and camp, I got the stove and cooler. If your group is bigger than 4 I can get a friend to come along with a car. come ride mex!

I am curious if anyone can suggest a couple of types of boards for some of the local So Cal San Diego surf? It's been a few years since I was out in the surf and since then I have put on a bit of weight and am not in the same shape I was when I paddling out on a regular basis. Now that I am getting back in the water, I need to get a another board, bhut I am a bit stuck on what to get. I was looking at getting something in a 8'0 - 8'6 shortboard, about 3 1/2" thick. My bro that I am paddling out with right now is trying to talk me into an egg, semi egg, or a longboard to get back into the surf again, but I am just not completely sure on what I should do. Any suggestions from anyone would be great and I would appreciate it.
